1. From DIY-workshops to product development

Inspired by other skibuilders, Maxi, his brother Tim and Johannes launched DIY ski building workshops from 2016 to 2019.
During the workshops in the factory of the treehouse builder Baumbaron, they copied the state of the art in ski construction. They used fibreglass, epoxy resin, top layer, wooden core, steel edges, plastic running surface, ABS sidewalls and rubber. Quite a mix of materials. This actually produces hazardous waste, as the skis cannot be recycled. They either go to landfill or are first incinerated and then dumped. But Maxi asked himself, is there an alternative? Where is the innovation there?

Niklas and Maxi met during their Erasmus study visit to Innsbruck and have been friends ever since. Niklas actually studied communications technology in Helsinki and Maxi architecture in Munich. But they both came to the heart of the Alps for the mountains. In the 2014/2015 season, they spent a lot of time together in the mountains, with each of them clocking up 100 days of skiing. In the meantime, Niklas has worked in several IT jobs. In 2015, for example, he founded an online coffee shop for the office and at home, specialising in organic and sustainable coffees. He has learnt that many everyday things can have a big impact. For example, coffee is the second largest source of carbon dioxide emissions in the Finnish diet and the cultivation of coffee is particularly harmful to biodiversity. That's why it's important to think about what can be improved, even in banal, everyday things! He now works as a software developer at the Finnish company RELEX, which minimises retailers' losses.
Based on their experience (ski construction and sales/online shop), the two of them thought, why don't we join forces and founded gemsjaegers.ski in 2021. Your online shop for sustainable ski equipment.

4. Donation

Transparency is extremely important to us, not only in terms of sustainability, but also in terms of price. How is our price made up? In order to keep the price as low as possible for you, we don't use all kinds of bells and whistles and we don't spend any money on advertising - in principle, that's your money and you would have to pay for it. 3% of our turnover is donated to charitable causes. We currently support Cradle2Cradle, Ecosia-Baumfods and the Finnish Natural Heritage Foundation. Keep up the good work! The individual items that are incurred are listed in the graphic.
